Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Christianity’s sanctum, is controlled by six Christian sects: Greek Orthodox, Catholic, Armenian, Coptic, Syrian and Ethiopian. The six sects all work to protect and maintain an ancient and fragile status quo.. Father Samuel, 80, an Armenian Patriarch, arrived at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre as a child. Since then it’s his only home ever known. And when everyone turns in for the night, he leads us through the church’s deserted hallways and empty corridors into the areas one must never enter unaccompanied – and with keys he and no one else holds.
